Union University announced Monday that Nick Saban, head coach of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team, will speak at the Roy L. White Legacy Golf and Gala May 6.
Saban has won four national titles and has been head coach of the Miami Dolphins, the Louisiana State University Tigers, Michigan State University and the University of Toledo.
In 2008, Forbes Magazine named him “The Most Powerful Coach in Sports.”
Saban also has been honored as National Coach of the Year five times, according to Union University’s website.
Tommy Sadler, director of athletics at Union University, said Saban not only cares about athletics but also has started and been involved with various programs to work with children and promote education.
Saban and his wife, Terry, founded the Nick’s Kids Fund in 1998. According to its website, Nick’s Kids is “a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children, family, teacher and student causes.”
Also according to the website, the Nick’s Kids Fund has donated more than $1.5 million to various organizations.
“Nick Saban is an outstanding choice,” Sadler said. “He’s been a winner at every place that he’s been, and not only do his teams win, but he wins the right way. He cares very much about academics and about players graduating. … He’s a great coach and he’s a great leader, and he and his wife have always been involved in community activities, so he really understands the value of a scholarship banquet.”
Golf and Gala is a fundraiser for Union’s athletic programs.
