The Cardinal & Cream received an award for “overall excellence in a student publication” at the Advisors of Christian Collegiate Media conference held May 18.
The contest, held in conjunction with the annual “Awards of Excellence”competition run by the Evangelical Press Association, evaluates overall
excellence in student publications.
Cardinal & Cream took home fourth place in the “overall” category. The organization also awarded prizes in eight categories representing
different aspects of publishing.
Cardinal & Cream received six awards in five of the eight categories:
•“Best editorial” (tie for second place) – “Chapel schedule raises gender inequality issues” by Beth Byrd, and “Assumptions ignore diversity” by Katherine Burgess
•“Best personality feature” (third place) – “Campus intercessor’s success echoes in stories of those she had helped” by Jill Miller
•“Interview article” (first place) – “Campus intercessor’s success echoes in stories of those she had helped” by Jill Miller

•“Photo feature” (second place) – “Deck the halls” by Ebbie Davis

Senior advertising major Jill Miller received two of the awards.
“Winning the awards was a pretty big surprise for me,” Miller said. “I was also very excited, because I really worked hard on all the stories I wrote, and getting that kind of affirmation and recognition gave me a sense of accomplishment.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for something that you put so much time and effort into.”
Beth Byrd received second place for “best editorial.”
“I was certainly excited to find out that Katherine Burgess and I tied for second place for our columns, but I also was thrilled to learn that other Cardinal & Cream staff members won various awards for their hard work,” Byrd said.
Award recipients are judged based on writing quality, content choices and design.
