Kappa Delta Sorority celebrated International Women’s Friendship Month in September, and in honor of the designation, the sorority hosted two events, a Panhellenic Zumba night and a cupcake decorating party.
International Women’s Friendship month is a month-long holiday established to allow women to remember the vital role their friends play in their lives and to celebrate the women whom they love and cherish.
“Friendships are dynamic and change very quickly,” said Kristen Miller, senior business management major and vice president of operations in Kappa Delta. “It is important that we take the time we have to show the women in our lives how much we are thankful for them and appreciate them.”
Panhellenic Zumba night was held Sept. 10 at the Kappa Delta house.
“We invited our Panhellenic sisters from both Chi Omega and Zeta Tau Alpha to join us,” Miller said. “We had the opportunity to celebrate the great friendships we have among the Greek community here at Union.”
The second event, a cupcake decorating party, was rescheduled for Oct. 1 on the Bowld Commons patio.
Women from all over campus and throughout the Jackson community were invited to attend to celebrate friendships they have built.
“We did the cupcake decorating party last year,” said Lilia Diaz, vice president of public relations. “It was great to see girls from different majors and social groups on campus all come together to celebrate with us.”
International Women’s Friendship Month actually started as National Women’s Friendship Day.
It was established in 1999 by Kappa Delta Sorority. In 2009, Kappa Delta decided to expand the celebration from one day to a full month.
“International Women’s Friendship month involves all women,” Miller said. “It is a month designated for women all over the world to celebrate and remember the women who have greatly impacted their lives and have changed them for the better by being their friend.”
The Kappa Delta chapter at Union has celebrated National Friendship Day since 1999, but after it officially became a month-long celebration, members began celebrating the idea during the entire month of September in 2009.
“This time is very special to us because it is an opportunity for us to recognize the women who have loved us, encouraged us, pushed us to become the best version of ourselves, been there for us and supported us,” Miller said. “This month is to recognize the women that we have the honor and privilege of calling our friends.”
