Campus guest accidentally triggers false fire alarm in Penick

A false fire alarm went off in the Penick Academic Complex at approximately 3 p.m. today.

A guest of a Union student had accidentally brushed a backpack against a fire alarm pull station, triggering the alarm. Jackson firefighters arrived at the building by 3:10 p.m.

Carson Hawkins, director of safety and security, said it was a typical false alarm.

“We always like it when it’s a false alarm,” Hawkins said. “We never want it to be real, so we get to walk through the motions as if it were real. It’s good training experience for us.”

Prior to the alarm, covers for the pull stations already had been ordered to avoid false triggers.

The covers are expected to arrive next week.
