As Homecoming Feb. 23 came to a close, one man held an audience captive in Union’s G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel.
Lecrae, a Christian rap artisPropaganda and comedian Bone Hampton, performed as part of the Higher Learning tour.
It took effort to get the Grammy Award-winning artist to Jackson, said Carly Silas, SAC Homecoming concert committee chairperson.
She said staff member Matthew Marshall connected with officials at Lane College to get the Higher Learning tour to Jackson.Lecrae’s tour focuses on historically black colleges and universities.
SAC adviser Jared Dauenhauer said Lane College was invited “and had reserved tickets, but we never heard back about whether they were going to use them, so we released them to the public when we had permission to do so.”
Reeves Garrett, chairman of the Homecoming concert hospitality committee, started working early to prepare the artists’ dressing rooms.
“(LeCrae) struck me as someone that was extremely genuine,” Garrett said. “He was extremely quiet and humble. You couldn’t tell that he’d just been in a concert.”
