On Oct. 24, Union’s pro-life organization, Life139, will host “Personhood and the Value of Life.”
Melody Kramer, junior nursing major and president of Life139, said the event “will be a panel discussion of Union professors and faculty on both the philosophical and practical aspects of personhood.”
Kramer added that the purpose is to “bring in a variety of perspectives from different field to explore what it means to be a person and the implications of these views on pro-life and human rights issues such as abortion, euthanasia, organ donation, stem cell research, end-of-life decision making and other pertinent issues.”
Panel speakers include James Huggins, professor of biology; Jill Webb, professor of nursing and assistant director of the Honors Community; Ben Mitchell, Graves professor of Moral Philosophy; and Paul Mayer, MSN-RN and director of health services.
Kramer said students from all majors are encouraged to attend because the topics discussed will be pulled from many disciplines.
Kramer also wants to encourage students to bring their own questions and thoughts pertaining to the idea of personhood, because these will be incorporated into the panel discussion.
“Our hope for this event is to bring together wisdom from a variety of sources from the Union academic community to form a framework of the complicated topic of personhood,” Kramer said. “Though we will begin from a more philosophical and scientific context, we do hope to pull in very practical, real-world issues as well.”
