Union’s men’s soccer team is starting off the 2013 season and final year of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II membership process strong with a 2-0 winning streak.

Union scored first in the match against Cumberland University with an unassisted goal at the halfway mark from Diego Santos, senior business administration major and mid fielder.

Union held the 1-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Caleb Mills, senior business administration and forward, scored his first goal of the game assisted by Santos.

Five minutes later, Cumberland scored its only goal.

Taylor Mayo, a Union graduate student, scored the last goal with nine minutes left to play, setting the final score at 3-1.

The men’s team won its second game Oct. 7 against Trevecca Nazarene University on its home field with a score of 4-1. Union scored first six minutes into the match and again 12 minutes later.

The score remained 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Union scored again as Santos scored his second goal of the game and third of the season at the way mark.

Union added a final goal after 81 minutes from Alex Pratt, junior business administration major and forward, to set the final at 4-1.

Pratt said it felt good to score the final goal and is excited about the men’s upcoming season.

“I felt like it took away any hope Trevecca had of coming back,” Pratt said. “My team put me in a good spot to score, and I am excited about this season. I don’t think that anyone will outwork us.

“We will be a lot more unified this year than in the years past. This year will be a lot less about individuals and a lot more about everyone doing their part. If we do that, who knows where it will take us?”
