This semester’s concert series saw acts like the Knoxville-based band Cereus Bright, Nashville’s Thad Kopec and the Portland, Oregon trio Joseph.

“This semester has been fun to say the least,” said Clark Bilbrey, sophomore athletic training major and member of the Barefoots leadership team that produces the Barefoots concert series each semester. “We have seen bands from richly diverse backgrounds and musical styles play on the Barefoots stage.”

Cereus Bright headlined the first show of the semester, with support coming from Boom Forest. Cereus Bright is a duo from Knoxville, Tennessee, made up of Evan Ford and Tyler Anthony.

“Cereus Bright and Boom Forest resonated the sounds of summer in the south,” said Brady Heyen, senior philosophy major and member of the Barefoots leadership team. “It was unintentional, but the organic nature of each show fit nicely with the changing of the seasons.”

Thad Kopec headlined the second show of the semester, with Jackson native The Kernal giving support. Kopec is a relative newcomer to the music scene, and this was one of his first shows.

“This is the third full-band show we’ve ever done,” said Kopec. “Getting the band together here has really made me feel encouraged to start talking to people and booking more shows.”

Joseph, a Portland-based trio of sisters, headlined the third and final show of the semester, with another Jackson native Alice Calvery opening. Joseph played a set featuring songs from their debut album, “Native Dreamer Kin.”

“There’s a difference with people in the room and playing a show with people,” said Natalie Closer, a member of Joseph. “Tonight was incredible because we felt like people were really with us in it.”

Barefoots Joe will continue their yearly concert series in the spring semester.

“Looking back, it was a successful semester at Barefoots,” said Heyen. “It definitely set the bar high for next semester.”
