With student design, faculty content and student editing, Volume 34 of the Journal of Union Faculty Forum is in the works. This is an annual publication comprised of submissions from faculty of various departments.
About three years ago, the head of the English department approached Dr. Christine Bailey, Assistant Professor of English and Director of Composition Support, about developing an editing class. Incorporating the JUFF was part of the initial plan.
Editors from different disciplines had previously led the JUFF until students got involved in the process.
Professor Melinda Posey’s typography graphic design class works in tandem with Bailey’s editing class.
The design class proposed their designs for the cover, inside layout and website of the JUFF to their client, the editing class. Posey and Bailey are committed to creating a professional environment to further prepare their students for realistic career experiences.
Brittany Vernon, junior art major, was chosen as the lead designer, and she will help oversee the aesthetic side of the project.
Vernon has gotten the unique opportunity of working with her sister, Amanda Vernon, sophomore English major, on this project.
“She’s not biased,” Vernon said. “She is good at looking at the criteria and then choosing a design based on what the editorial board is looking for.”
The eight students in the editing class are each assigned a faculty submission to edit. Bailey acts as an adviser to her students while serving as editor-in-chief of the JUFF for the third year.
“As editor-in-chief, I oversee the publication,” she said. “I teach the students what it means to be an editor, what can
be changed, what cannot be changed, what we should ask, what we should not ask . . . it’s just really trying to offer a class that looks like a professional setting.”
The publication will be sent to the printer around Thanksgiving and will be ready to release at the close of the semester.
