In many nations around the world, Christians face persecution for practicing their faith. On Tuesday night, the office of spiritual life hosted Missions Late Night to introduce the Union community to training provided to those making disciples under such conditions.

“This is an amazing opportunity to learn from our missionaries in residence and put into practice the approach to worship that they teach in Southeast Asia,” said Lee Wilson, director of discipleship.

Union’s missionaries in residence, Dan and Holli Lancaster, taught the workshop. Students were shown a demonstration on how the persecuted church worships together in Myanmar.

The Lancaster’s said that they hope students will learn a simple way that they can obey the great commandment and teach others to do the same.

“We are praying that God will burden students at Union to pray for the persecuted church,” Lancaster said.

Throughout the workshop, the Lancaster’s taught from personal experiences from time spent serving in Myanmar, giving students the opportunity to experience worship in secret.

Students broke into groups and recited scripture and prayed for the persecuted church.

“It is easy to forget that our experience of the Christian faith is not the norm for global Christianity,” Wilson said. “We have countless brothers and sisters in Christ who face immense challenges and systemic persecution for practicing their faith and worshipping Jesus.”

Missions Late Night is a university ministries tradition dating back five years. In the past, Missions Late Night happened during GO Week. This year, the office of spiritual life chose to feature it during their Missions & Ministry Expo, which took place Tuesday and Wednesday in the Brewer Dining Hall

The expo consisted of several missions organizations, Christian ministries and camps promoting a variety of opportunities for students to be involved in God’s work locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

“I am eager for Union students to experience something outside the bounds of what is familiar — to be challenged in their faith and inspired to consider the role they can play in the spread of the gospel throughout the entire world,” Wilson said.
