More than 350 students enjoyed hot chocolate and s’mores by a fire near the Hope quads Monday from 8-10 p.m. at the Union homecoming kickoff event to celebrate Samuel W. “Dub” and Susie Oliver, university president and first lady.
A joint effort between the Student Activities Council (SAC), Student Government Association (SGA) and Union staff, the kickoff event welcomed students, staff and faculty to gather as a community and celebrate the new president and first lady.
Jared Dauenhauer, assistant director of student leadership and engagement and SAC adviser, said the event focused on community with the Olivers.
“We will have a fire going, we’ll have lights, and there will also be some opportunities for some spirit, some cheers,” Dauenhauer said before the event. “I think students can expect a fun atmosphere to hang out with our president and first lady and a good opportunity to get excited for what everyone has planned for the rest of the week.”
Dauenhauer said the event was designed for students to meet and fellowship with the Olivers in order to create the beginning momentum of homecoming week. The event, he said, was unlike anything Union has done before.
The Fred Fanatics led students in various chants around the fire. Buster the Bulldog also made an appearance, encouraging school spirit.
Students wore their free “Dub” T-shirts as a surprise for the new president.
Oliver said he was completely surprised by seeing so many T-shirts with his name displayed on the front.
Dauenhauer said events like the homecoming kickoff play a critical role in encouraging excitement within the Union community that will build throughout the years for homecomings to follow.
Bryan Carrier, vice president of student life and dean of students, said, “The Homecoming Kick-Off is a unique opportunity for the Union community to gather and celebrate the beginning of a historic week in the life of Union University. It is a week in which the heritage of the University is celebrated through the events of homecoming, and the legacy of university leadership is honored through the inauguration of Dr. Dub as the 16th president of this great institution.”
Carrier said the kickoff, among other events throughout homecoming week, is special this year due to homecoming and the inauguration occurring in close proximity to each other.
Jenaye White, senior public relations major and SGA president, shared her excitement for the event.
“It’s a chance to celebrate the beginning of homecoming week with students because we’ll be outdoors and have fall treats and have a chance to fellowship with Dr. Dub and Susie,” White said.
