On the weekend of April 15, Hal Poe, Charles Colson Professor of Faith & Culture, led his “C.S. Lewis: His Life & Work” class, along with many other current and former Union students and professors, on a retreat to Montreat College.
“The Inklings weekend in Montreat is an annual retreat hosted by the Inklings Fellowship,” said Poe. “It’s open to anyone, we have people join us from all over the United States.”
Montreat College is in Montreat, North Carolina, east of Asheville.
“C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein and their literary group, The Inklings, give us the occasion to meet, but we really focus on how do you live in the world as a Christian,” said Poe.“They are examples of people who did it, and we explore some of their writings in terms of implications for contemporary life. This year we focused on the 100th birthday of Joy Davidman, Lewis’ wife and a writer in her own right. We focused on all of the ladies associated with the Inklings like Davidman, and Dorothy Sayers.”
Poe has been bringing students on the retreat for years, and as a co-host of the retreat, has even had several speakers from Union, including Dr. C. Ben Mitchell, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, speak at the retreat.
Poe opens the trip up for anyone to come because it offers the opportunity to get away from the business of school for a weekend and get to know peers on a deeper level.
“It was a really fun weekend,” said Hunter Hawes, senior theology and missions major. “Me and three other guys decided to camp, and we made some really good memories and had a lot of fun. It was a lot more of a retreat and it was very relaxing and peaceful. We learned a lot about how the women who knew the Inklings influenced their work. It was great to have time to see the mountains and enjoy the area.”
