Union University intramurals started back up this past week with its first sport of the new semester.

Basketball season is now underway after a week long delay from the icy weather conditions the city recently experienced. The projected start of the season was Feb. 15, but had to be rescheduled for Feb. 22.

“We are always excited to get intramurals started for the semester,” said Toby Brown, director of intramurals.

Brown also included a few of his predictions as to which teams will succeed during basketball season.

“I expect most of the fraternities and sororities to have good teams,” Brown said, “as well as some independent teams.”

Brown is not the only one who is excited about this season starting. Jordan Clarke, sophomore business management major and member of the upper division men’s team, Pure Talent, and Jalen Sowell, sophomore Christian ministries and missions major, who is a member of the lower division men’s team, American Snipers, are ready for basketball to begin also.

“I am excited because intramural sports are a good stress outlet,” Clarke said.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun. I really like the guys I’m playing with so I’m really looking forward to it,” added Sowell.

Clarke believes that the upper division men’s team, Weapons of Mass Destruction, has a good chance of winning this year, using words such as “seasoned, experienced, practiced and dedicated.”

Certain aspects of basketball intramurals will be very competitive this year. According to Clarke, it gets rather competitive in men’s upper division.

“People will say they’re out there to have fun, but everyone wants to win,” said Sowell. “It’s hard to have fun if you’re getting beat by 20 points.”

Even though basketball season was off to a late start, Clarke still believes that this will be a great season.

Right now, SAE Team 1 and Weapons of Mass Destruction are tied for first place in men’s upper division, while PharmDefense leads the way for men’s lower division with an overall record of 3-0. For the women’s division, Kappa Delta Team 1 is tied with Retired for first place of upper division with a record of 2-0, and the Back 9 Ballers, Kappa Delta Team 2 and Zeta Team 2 are all tied for first place of the women’s lower division with a record of 2-0 as well.

The playoffs are scheduled to be around March 12 and will conclude before spring break.
