Penelope Cline views putting on her apron and name tag before assuming her position behind the counter at Barefoots Joe as similar to when an actress takes on an identity and rests in that role.
Cline, sophomore business and psychology major, became a barista about a year ago in her hometown Kansas City, Missouri. When Cline returned to Union in the fall of 2014, she began her work at Barefoots.
“What drew me to the job, was the craft element of the work,” said Cline. ” I think and feel deeply, and there is something immensely comforting about the hands-on grounding aspect of working with your hands.”
Cline loves repetition and ritual of her work because it allows her hands to know what to do when her heart is distracted. Through her beautiful work, she feels a sense of home and belonging. Cline knows she has so much more to learn about the art of coffee, but she looks forward to having a deeper experience.
“I know that I could work here for years and still have so much left to learn,” said Cline.” I love that with that element of comfort. There’s also such a stretching element too that is pushing me to learn more so that I can have an even more intimate understanding of the coffee, the work and be excellent at all the different facets of being a barista.”
Working at Barefoots is inspiring for Cline because of the passion of the whole Barefoots’ team to do their job as excellent, intimately and hospitably as they can. One of Cline’ proudest moments of being a barista was when she was the first barista to make a Green Tea Latte from Barefoots.
Cline is also involved with Union’s Improv team serving as the team’s secretary. She uses this as an opportunity to hangout and laugh with the “coolest cats on campus.”
Barefoots is improperly spelled at least three times in this article. Who proofreads this? And why isn’t Baristas capitalized here as it is in other articles of this series? Consistency is good.
