The Union men’s and women’s golf teams traveled to Tunica, Mississippi, on April 20 and 21 to compete in the Gulf South Conference Championships. The 54-hole event started Monday morning, April 20.
The women’s team goal going in to the tournament was to play smart, to not let the windy conditions and muddy courses affect their play and to give their best performance.
“For the most part, everyone dealt with the conditions pretty well,” said KayCee Lindberg, sophomore sports management major. “Everyone played decent, and we all had our slip ups.”
At the end of the first round the women were ranked 6th. The top finisher for Union’s women’s team was Lindsay McRee, junior business administration major.
The final ranking for the women was 6th.
“I hope that next season we all continue to work hard and find our balance,” Lindberg said. “I’m looking forward to growing as a team.”
The men’s team looked forward to playing at the Tunica National Golf Club because they were ready to contend for the Gulf South Championship. Team members said that despite not playing well the past few tournaments, the team wanted to play their best for the graduating seniors, Andrew Knight, business management major, and Steven Coffelt, business management major.
“Everybody played well,” said Trey Whitnell, junior accounting major. “We enjoyed playing, even though the conditions were not ideal.”
At the end of the first round the men shared 10th place with Mississippi College.
Hunter Travis, sophomore sports management major, was the team’s medalist with a team low score of 74. Jon Sain, freshman undecided major, also played well during the tournament, shooting a 78 in the final round.
Looking forward to next season, Whitnell discussed wanting to continue to improve and win a few tournaments.
“If we have our mindset to improve each tournament we play, we should be able to make a run to win the GSC Championship,” Whitnell said.
The men’s team finished in 10th place.
