For the first time this year, Union senators gathered in Harvey Auditorium to debate legislation on a wide variety of topics, from buying jerseys to renting dunk tanks to supporting North Korean refugees.

The Union Jaxx requested $200 to purchase new jerseys.

“About this time, one year ago, there were two fairly gangly Alaskans that came down to Union University and they had a dream of starting a Frisbee team,” said Christian Winter, junior Christian studies major. “But last year, the powers that be in the Frisbee world decided that to compete in a national tournament, you need jerseys that have numbers on the front and the back. This bill will allow us to buy those jerseys.”

The bill passed with little debate.

The Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers asked for $175. Part of the money will be used to build swings for the pool area. The remaining funds will be used to rent a dunk tank for Family Weekend, with professors volunteering to be dunked. The resolution passed.

Senators also voted in favor of giving $200 to Liberty in North Korea. As a new organization, it requested the money to kickoff fundraising. The organization will donate 90 percent of its profits to global NGO Liberty in North Korea. The remaining 10 percent will be retained by the Union chapter to fund future events.

Eddie Echevarria, junior political science major, presented a resolution proposing lighting be installed around the basketball and volleyball courts outside the Penick Academic Complex. Some senators voiced concern about the same resolution being rejected by the university a few years ago. Nevertheless, the bill passed.

Senators also passed resolutions proposing the annual tuning of pianos in the Bowld and Jennings and the installation of stepping stones between Barefoots Joe and the Bowld.

Dr. Randall Bush addressed the student body to request topics for the Quality Enhancement Program, a self-study that the university conducts once every 10 years. The general honors program was a result of the last QEP. All students are encouraged to submit academic-related topics by Sept. 23.

The Students Activities Council gained 12 new members. The council is offering a movie on the lawn during Family Weekend and looking for ideas for a November event. Ideas should be communicated to a SAC member within the next few days.

“It is a mutual endeavor of ours to serve the Union community, and we want to support the Student Government Association and Senate in the same way that you support us,” said Reeves Garrett, president of SAC.
