The participants of the Tour of Jackson Bike Ride were able to see the parts of Jackson that many people do not see, and they see them up close and personal.
Union’s Athletic Training Student Organization (ATSO) held its 3rd annual Tour of Jackson Bike Ride on Saturday, April 11. The ride consisted of four different routes that riders could choose to take. There were 16, 35, 50 or 62 mile routes available for bikers to choose from.
Jonathan Allen, clinical coordinator and assistant professor of athletic training, physical education, wellness and sport, coordinated and directed the event. This was the first year for Allen to be in charge.
All of the money that was made from the event will go directly towards ticket funding for the Southeast Athletic Trainer Association (SEATA) Conference, which all ATSO students are invited to go to.
According to Allen, one of the best parts of the bike ride was the positive feedback they received from the patrons who participated.
“Having people come in and tell my students that they did a great job and that the event went well [was the best part],” Allen said.
Keith Bates, associate professor of history, was one of the participants in this year’s race.
“I like supporting something that is Union connected,” Bates said.
Bates has participated in bike ride all three years the event has taken place. When asked about a reason why he liked the event so much, he simply said that he liked it because it was not a race, it was a ride.
Dr. Bates is an avid rider. Annually, Bates rides 2,700-3,000 miles. This year, he participated in the 50 mile route.
“I love to ride,” Bates said.
According to Bates, the best part of the ride is finishing.
“Finishing and eating pizza [after] is the best part,” Bates said.
Athletic training students ran the event for the most part, and were on call for any medical attention that may have been needed.
“The athletic training students are some of the top students on campus,” Allen said.
