The Union Jaxx ultimate frisbee team traveled to Miami University (Ohio) to compete in the Boogienights Tournament this past weekend. Union Jaxx placed second out of sixteen teams participating.
The team played a total of six games against opponents such as Xavier, Dayton and the host school, Miami.
The rainy weather conditions did not stop play in the tournament or the Jaxx competing at a high level although games were moved to the turf fields because of the rain.
“We knew we had a strong team coming in to the weekend,” said Dalton Deluca, senior economics major. “But we did not expect to place second for sure.”
Despite the scrapes some team members received from playing on the turf, the team played one of the best weekends thus far in their season.
“We played better, calmer and together,” Deluca said.
Union Jaxx displayed their teamwork in one game in particular. In the game against Dayton, the team was down 7-2 at half-time. Then after the half the Jaxx made a 11-4 run, which resulted in a 13-11 win for Union.
The team performed well in the tournament, but they said they want to keep improving for their upcoming games this weekend.
“We need to focus on staying intense,” Deluca said. “We want to start the game intense and keep it up when we are playing defense as well.”
On Saturday, March 21, the team will host Harding University (Arkansas) and Rhodes College out of Memphis.
The games this weekend will be held on Union’s soccer field.
The Jaxx will take on Harding University at 12 p.m. The second game will be at 3 p.m. against Rhodes College.
