The Lady Bulldogs softball team began play in the 2015 Gulf South Conference tournament on April 30, at 11:30 a.m. against the Shorter University Lady Hawks. Going into the game, the Lady Bulldogs had an overall record of 31-18, while the Lady Hawks had a record of 32-14.
Union entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, while Shorter came in as No. 4 in the GSC.
Despite a tough fight, the Lady Bulldogs ended up losing the game with a final score of 1-2.
“Though we lost, we have full confidence in continuing the tournament,” said Reagan Schrader, junior psychology major and utility player for the team. “We all know anything can happen when it is tournament time.”
The tournament is double elimination, and the Lady Bulldogs will face Delta State University on Friday, May 1, at 9:00 a.m.
In preparation, the team did not do anything out of the ordinary in order to get ready for the tournament.
“Practice wasn’t any different,” said Kelly Robey, senior sports management major and pitcher for the team. “We treated it like going into any other game.”
“The only thing that we did differently to prepare for the tournament was that the coaches tried to put an extra amount of pressure on us,” said Whitney Christian, junior accounting major and second baseman for the team.
The Lady Bulldogs have an extremely optimistic outlook for the remainder of the tournament.
“We have to go into every game knowing we can win if we all do our jobs,” Robey said. “We just have to take it one game at a time.”
“Our outlook on the rest of the tournament is to play hard and leave it all out on the field,” Christian said.
If the Lady Bulldogs win tomorrow against Delta State, they will continue on in the tournament, and play another game at a time that is still to be determined.
