The room lit up as Student Activities Council President Jessica Vinyard walked through the door, tossing her golden hair over one shoulder and beaming a smile as wide as the Grand Canyon.
Vinyard, a junior mathematics major, was elected to her new position in November. Taking office at the beginning of the spring semester, her goals extend beyond leading a weekly meeting and answering questions.
As Vinyard steps into this semester, she wants to ensure the SAC “spirit of fun” permeates through all of campus, not just at specific times or specific events. Even when the SAC members aren’t wearing their red and white rugby shirts, Vinyard wants to inspire them to bring fun to every part of their lives.
“We want to bring campus together,” she said. “We are striving for unity among every area of campus.”
Vinyard said she decided to run for the position because she loved the organization’s mission. Even before she came to Union, she loved the idea of SAC. She enjoyed helping people have fun through SAC events and wanted to take a leadership role to make a greater impact.
Vinyard’s favorite SAC event is Carl Perkins Christmas, an event that allows students to sponsor a child’s Christmas by buying them presents and hosting them on campus for an evening.
“You get to see the whole student body come together for a purpose,” Vinyard said. “These kids wouldn’t have Christmas otherwise. It’s so sweet.”
SAC’s purpose is to foster community on campus. It hosts many events throughout the year, including Casey Jones Hullabaloo, Movie on the Lawn, Midnight Movie at the Humboldt Theater, Carl Perkins Christmas, Bingo, Be Our Guest and Variety Show.
