“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.’” (v. 15b-16).
I can only imagine what would have happened if Moses would’ve missed it. He could have easily laughed at what the Lord was promising him, reasoning with himself that there was no way it could be true. Crossing an entire sea’s span on utterly dry ground? That seems like crazy talk. But Moses chose to remember. He chose to retrace the faithfulness of the Lord, who had already called out to Moses in a burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) and used Moses to lead God’s people out of slavery through a series of signs and plagues that revealed the holy power of the Lord (Exodus 4-12). Moses had seen the Lord’s past faithfulness on magnificent display, and, instead of setting his eyes on the circumstances at hand, he looked to his faithful Father even in the unknown.
In the same way, we cannot let our limited understanding keep us from the abundance found in His limitless sovereignty.
You are fully known and fully loved by the Creator of the universe. He sees you and knows exactly where you are and exactly what you’re going through. You have never been out of His sight, and His plan for your life is perfect and far beyond anything you could even dare to dream. But we could easily miss this far greater plan if we buy the lie that we know best.
Wherever the Lord leads, He is always faithful to go before us and make a way even when it seems there is no way. And what’s more? He goes with us as our guide in every circumstance. We will never walk alone, and that is a promise we can rest in every step of the way. So, like Moses, let’s not miss it.
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)
Reflect
Where have you seen the Lord’s faithfulness on magnificent display in your own life?
What is keeping you from trusting Him to be faithful in your circumstances now?
Lord, you are sovereign, and you know best. Even when I can’t understand or see a way in the middle of my circumstances, I will trust in you. You are my faithful Father, and I don’t ever want to forget that. Continue to remind me that your ways are higher and your plans are greater. I don’t want to miss the abundance you have for my life, even if it means I don’t know exactly what’s ahead. Amen.
