The fifth senate session of this semester met on Nov. 1, affirmed two new student organizations, passed bills to allocate $200 to various organizations and proposed a student organization calendar and reduced faculty parking.
Senate opened with a Scripture reading from chaplain Brandon Harper and followed with SGA treasurer Austin Hamlett reporting that $1,400 remained in the senate budget.
Two organizations were affirmed into senate: Union Jillz, the women’s Ultimate Frisbee team, and the Bike Recycling Club, which takes abandoned bikes from around campus and restores them for resale. Funds from the bikes will be used for the restoration and updating of the trails in the Union Woods.
Sponsors from the Art Therapy Club presented Resolution 196-30, which asked for the allocation of $200 for the buying of materials for on-campus events, future off-campus events and for their Guatemala trip.
“This money will allow us to purchase art materials so that the places we go volunteer at will not have to pay for anything,” said Sydney Rolfe, senior art therapy major. The bill passed.
Senate also granted $200 to the Union Jaxx Ultimate Frisbee team for traveling costs and entry fees for tournaments, and the same amount to to the Interfraternity council (IFC). The IFC wants to encourage more unity throughout the fraternities by hosting different events. The $200 would help offset the additional cost these events would charge on each individual fraternity member.
Senate also allocated $200 to Sigma Alpha Epsilon to buy supplies for their Puerto Rico fundraiser.
Senate also passed a resolution that asked to create a calendar for student organizations. Because Union has over 60 student organizations, which all play an active role on Union’s campus, many students cannot keep up with all the different events that the organizations host. The sponsors proposed this resolution in hopes of fixing that problem.
The final resolution passed asked that Union University eliminate the 15-minute parking in front of the Hurt and Watters Quads and reduce the amount of faculty parking.
“Parking is limited near the Hurt and Watters quads and the 15-minute parking I hardly ever used. Also, White Hall has a ton of faculty parking that is hardly used,” said Madeline Fleming, sophomore public relations major.
SAC will hold the Casey Jones Hullabaloo on Nov. 11. There will be an event called Dine and Discuss on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. Director of Student Life Bo Mantooth will discuss how one must be a good follower before becoming a great leader. The event will be held in Coburn 1.
