Buster’s Been Dognapped: Costume Coffee House Will Feature A Scooby-Doo Mystery

Union University Residence Life will be hosting its annual Costume Coffee House event in the Bowld gym on Friday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m.

This year’s costume party, typically held on the Friday before Halloween, will have a Scooby-Doo theme and will feature various members of Residence Life staff dressed as Scooby-Doo characters, such as Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Scrappy Doo and the Mud Monster Villain. As part of the night’s entertainment, Buster the bulldog will be “dognapped” and students will be tasked with helping the “Scooby-Doo gang” find him and capture the dognapper.

Students will compete in challenges hosted by the characters, who will be positioned at three different areas in the gym. After each team completes a challenge, the team will receive a clue to the location of a key that will help them get Buster back. If the team fails the challenge, they will have to come back later to try again for the clue. There will be a time-released clue at the end so that students are still free to participate in other activities, like competing in the costume contest, eating food and taking pictures.

Sabrina Clendenin, senior public relations major and resident staff assistant, is one of the people in charge of organizing the event. She said that this year’s Costume Coffee House is different because it is more focused on the theme than in previous years.

“I think before this, it has been mainly a hang-out place with food and music and cool decorations, but we really want people to want to participate in the game,” Clendenin said. “And on top of the dognapping, the RA’s have built actual carnival games for people to play.”

Clendenin said that the goal of Costume Coffee House is like any other ResLife event.

“We want to invite everyone to an event that anyone can find something they like to do at,” Clendenin said. “We want an element for each type of person. That’s why there’s so much to do and such diverse things to do.”

Rachel Lett, sophomore nursing major and RA of Hurt 3, will be dressed as Daphne Blake at the event.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s awesome costumes and watching people figure out where Buster is,” Lett said.

David Bowman, junior business administration major and RA of Pollard, will be dressed as Shaggy at the event and is looking forward to the wide array of games, the photo booth and the costume competition.

“It’s going to foster a good time for such a diverse group of students that are able to come together and help build a strong community on campus through this event,” Bowman said.
