Enactus Starts Skills For A Better Future Program

Enactus

Enactus, a club on campus, is starting a new program called “Skills for a Better Future” with the Care Center, an organization located in Jackson, and its purpose is to help people who may be having difficulty finding a job. The program is still in its beginning stages but aims to teach life skills such as sending professional emails, building resumes and other skills necessary for finding a job.

The Care Center is an organization that serves homeless and abused women and their children. Many of these women are victims of abuse and have been through unimaginable experiences. The Care Center seeks to help these women essentially re-start their lives and get the tools that will help them be successful.

This new program will teach the women skills such as basic computer usage, professionalism in business communication, building a resume, applying for jobs, interviewing and managing personal finances. Those who complete all sections of the program and pass a final assessment will receive a certification of completion.

“Our long term vision is to take this curriculum to people in need all over the Jackson area and find graduates from the program who are interested in continuing to teach the material to groups themselves,” said Kaylee Hart, a junior accounting major. “We are also interested in creating a more advanced program in the future.”

Enactus is a club open to anyone of any major on campus that wants to be involved. Enactus helps students use their skills to impact and educate the university and the Jackson community in a positive way, and the students involved are able to participate in projects to better the community.

“Enactus welcomes students from all majors to work with us on this and other programs that are designed to make a difference in the lives of people in our community,” said Brooke Emery, professor of marketing and faculty advisor for Enactus. “This hands-on work, in addition to changing peoples’ lives, also provides great life experience for our students.”

Enactus is involved in many ways in the community, but the Skills for a Better Future program is one that the organization is looking forward to. The organization is excited about this program because it is a good way to serve the community while also being a reminder of how often we take for granted simple skills like the ones that will be taught, and it also gives experience and preparation for students.
