Joy Moore Named New Assistant Director of the Honors Community

During Honors Coffee Hour on March 2, Dr. Scott Huelin introduced Joy Moore as the new assistant director of the Honors Community.

“The process of finding a new assistant director began in October of last year,” Huelin said. “There were six applicants and any of them would have made great additions… but Professor Moore really stood out to us from the beginning and the vote was unanimous.”

The Honors Community is experiencing mixed emotions as they welcome Moore because it also means the retirement of the first assistant director, Jill Webb.

“I am delighted to leave the role of assistant director in such hospitable hands,” Webb said. “I was able to see in her application what the Honors Community needs now, how it can continue to grow as part of the university and how the community can continue to be cultivated. The Honors Community matters greatly to me and I want it to continue to have an impact on people through Professor Moore.”

Moore has been a member of the Honors Curriculum Leadership Committee for over ten years and is very familiar with Honors. She has a degree in counseling, preparing her to mentor students within the Honors Community, has great student reviews on her classroom teaching and enthusiasm for what she might bring as well as what she might gain from the Honors Community.

“When the position opened, I had a few people encourage me to apply, and I’m grateful they did so,” Moore said. “The role combines much that I value—collaboration, community, robust inquiry and working for the flourishing of our students and our departments—and I’m delighted to serve in this capacity.”

Honors is community-oriented, and the Honors Community is excited to see how Moore’s strengths and talents will equip her to be an asset to the community.

“I really believe that leadership involves leveraging people’s gifts and strengths towards our common work,” Huelin said.

Moore will begin working as assistant director in June, with the help of Webb and Huelin to make the transition as seamless as possible.
