Union University hosted its Volleyball Classic Tournament over the weekend where the Lady Bulldogs split four games, going 2-2.
Union defeated both Lane College and Lemoyne-Owen College three sets to none but fell to Belmont Abbey College three sets to none and Henderson State University three sets to one.
In both of the losses, the Lady Bulldogs managed to keep each set close enough to have gone either way. This was largely due to the phenomenal defense of players like Christa Karns, senior social work major, and Delaney Peterson, freshman pre-pharmacy major, who led in blocks in either game.
Seeing a freshman step up in this situation is a good sign of things to come on a team that consists of mostly young players. While the record might not yet reflect the potential of the team, head coach Darrin McClure sees the success coming.
“What we need is our upperclassmen to step up and rise to the challenge,” said McClure. “I know they can do it. When the younger players gain experience and the older ones meet their potential, I believe we will see a shift in wins and losses.”
One of the upperclassmen who is stepping up is Abbie Rahn, junior elementary education major. She’s not taking her leadership role for granted, and the younger players are making it easier for her.
“It’s cool having that experience of two years to kind of pass down to all of the other girls,” said Rahn. “All of the girls are so open to new things to become a better player, so that makes it so much easier.”
Rahn also sees the potential in the team and sees these early non-conference tournaments as a chance to gain experience and improve as a team.
“Having these tournaments at the beginning of the year really helps us grow as a team,” said Rahn. “We’re going to get it, the talent is there for sure.”
The Union games at the tournament also saw an impressive student turnout. This student presence leaves a larger impact on the game than they may initially realize, and the team wants to show them how fun volleyball can actually be.
“The student turnout has been huge,” McClure said. “I am very thankful for the support. Volleyball is very fast paced and such a spectator friendly sport. There is always action! When fans learn the game, it becomes evident the girls that play are really good athletes.”
The Lady Bulldogs play Christian Brothers University at home on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6:00 p.m. to open conference play.
