This past weekend, the Bulldogs traveled to St. Charles, Mo., to face off against No. 17 ranked Lindenwood University and came up short in a shut-out series.
The games were originally scheduled to be played in Jackson at Union’s Fesmire Field. However, due to the rainy forecasts that covered the area, the games were moved to St. Charles.
Coming into the series, Union held a 3-3 record. They have now fallen to 3-6. In spite of the 3-6, 1-2 and 3-7 losses that the team collected this weekend, they are able to reflect on things they need to work on to keep moving forward this season.
Union’s head coach Lee Driggers believes the team’s offense was a key aspect in this weekend’s shut out.
“We are not producing offensively as a team,” Driggers said. “We are getting people on [base] but not getting the hits to score them.”
Junior Caleb DeMarigny reiterated these same frustrations when asked about the team’s offense.
“We pitched pretty well and our offense was solid for the most part but our bats were not there for the majority of the series,” DeMarigny said. “We are getting runners on base but then we are struggling to get the hits we need when we have runners in scoring position.”
Although the team’s offense may have had a rough weekend, it is still early in the season and the team is just getting started. The Bulldogs still have months of baseball ahead of them and the team’s goal of ending with a winning season in the Gulf South Conference is still attainable.
The Bulldogs will be back on the field this week as they take on Harding University on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Fesmire Field. Union will face Shorter University in a double-header on Saturday with game on Sunday. Both will begin at 1:00 p.m.
