After potentially bad weather postponed the game on Tuesday, Union’s baseball team faced off against Henderson State University at home Wednesday and came up short in a 6-3 loss.
Although students returned from spring break this past week with warm weather on their minds, that is not what they found at Fesmire Field Wednesday afternoon. Instead, they were met with temperatures in the 50s and a wind chill in the 40s.
Henderson State, out of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, is a member of the Great American Conference and came into the game with a record of 20-12. Union entered this game with a 11-22 record, fresh from a series against Mississippi College.
Henderson State started off the game by scoring two runs in the first inning off two back to back bases loaded walks. After this, Henderson State was able to add four more runs to the scoreboard and Union gave a valiant effort in the eighth and ninth innings bringing the final score to 6-3.
Several pitchers were cycled throughout the game with hopes of changing the direction. Although the team came up short in the end, the pitching team walked away with lessons learned and hopes for the future.
“We really just have to consistently get ahead in the count and throw quality pitches when we get ahead,” senior business management major JR Miller said. “If we do both of those things, we have a great chance of being successful.”
As the team moves forward from this game, they are doing so with a positive attitude. They have faced some tough losses this season but they remain hopeful for the future of their program.
“We saw today that we have depth in our team even though we lost,” sophomore marketing major Landon Walker said. “We saw some players that typically don’t play as often step up and perform and make great plays. This is what the team needs, players like that stepping up for games in the future.”
Be sure to come out to Fesmire Field this weekend to support the Bulldogs as they face off against Delta State. The series will begin with a double-header on Saturday and finish with a game on Sunday. Both will begin at 1:00 p.m.
