Adulting 101: Car Maintenance

On Thursday, Sept. 5, Union University Residence Life presented Adulting 101: Car Maintenance in the circle of life with Ben Bredow, residence director of the men’s quads, Nathan Heatherly, assistant residence director for the men’s quads, and a representative from the bike recycling club.

Students cycled through three stations. At one station, they learned how to change a tire and jump start a car. At another station, they learned how to change windshield wipers, and at the third station, they learned how to fix their bikes. Students took turns looking under the hoods of the cars Bredow and Heatherly had pulled into the circle of life, and some students tried these techniques themselves, such as removing and reattaching windshield wipers. There were even prizes including jumper cables and a first aid kit.

To start, Bredow emphasized the importance of knowing basic car maintenance. He told the story of a student who had broken down on the side of the road and had asked Bredow for a ride, so he could get his battery replaced. Instead, Bredow showed him how to change his own battery, which allowed the student to save money.

“Because college is such a time of transition and learning so many new things, sometimes the more practical life skills can be overlooked,” said Emily Rogers, sophomore nursing major and a women’s quads resident advisor. “So this Adulting 101 is a great opportunity for us to learn those things.”

Other students who attended the car maintenance event expressed interest in more Adulting 101 events in the future.

“I would also like to go to a ‘how to fix household appliances 101’ of some sort,” said Jodi Davis, sophomore worship leadership major. “Like what to check for in the washer or dryer if it doesn’t work or how to fix a shower head, refrigerator, air conditioning, or toilet- all sorts of useful skills that you need to know when you move out on your own.”
