On Thursday, Oct. 31, Union University residence life hosted their annual Costume Coffee House event as part of Union’s homecoming week.
Students could come dressed up in costumes and enter individual, small group or large group costume contests. This year’s Costume Coffee House included a hayride and haunted house for the first time. The fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, hosted the haunted house at their house right off of campus, transforming the building with curtains, fog and strobe lights. Students volunteered to dress up in costumes and scare other students. Students got on the hayride outside of the Bowld and rode down to the house, where they were left to enter at their own risk.
“My favorite part was the hayride and the Haunted ATO house,” said Anna Claire Adams, sophomore music performance major. “They did a great job with the decor and the costumes and got several good screams out of me!”
After the haunted house, students could return to the Bowld and gather around fire pits to make s’mores, or they could go inside and watch students compete in lip sync battles.
Shelby Morris won the individual costume competition, dressed as the Mad Hatter. The ladies of Paschall won the small group category, dressed as characters from Toy Story, and a group of sophomore girls, dressed as characters from Inside Out, won the large group competition.
ResLife has put on Costume Coffee House for several years now, but this was the first time it has been a part of Homecoming. Students could sign in with their organization and get homecoming points for being there.
“ResLife’s goal in putting on these events is to create an atmosphere for people to come together and have shared experiences,” said Emily Rogers, sophomore nursing major and resident advisor. “These shared experiences, in turn, help to cultivate a community where our lives can be shared.”
