On Wednesday, Feb. 13, students gathered in Harvey Hall for the first SGA senate meeting of the semester. After passing only one bill, with few questions and no debate, it resulted in a short first meeting.
“Welcome to the first senate of the semester, I would just like to encourage everyone that we are all new in our positions and we will all learn this together,” said Emma Sanders, a junior business administration major and SGA vice president.
The welcome statement was followed by a word of prayer and the ambassador’s report. Based on the legislation that was introduced last semester, there will not be an addition of picnic tables to the quads due to the expense of the project. However, because of the request that there should be better fire safety training on campus, the Safety & Security officers have now received new fire training.
The final update from last semester addressed the request for a 24/7 open location for students to gather, and at this time, there are no changes to accommodate this request.
Following the ambassador’s report was the first treasury report. The senate was informed that they would have $1800 to begin with this semester.
Finally, before jumping into legislation, the new clerk and president pro tempore were elected.
The only piece of legislation for the evening was a bill asking for the allocation of $200 to the Union University Jillz for the use of tournament bid fees and other team expenses. After two informational questions about tournaments and home games, the bill passed by an overwhelming majority with no debate.
The treasurer then gave a final treasury update, informing students that they now had $1600 remaining in the budget.
Finally, the new officers were sworn in and were followed by organizational announcements.
The SAC update included bingo night, which will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Brewer Dining Hall. They also announced a reminder that the Union University Variety Show is coming up, and the deadline to sign up for that is March 11.
Other announcements included Dine and Discuss with Dr. Bryan Carrier, which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 19. Assessment Day will be Wednesday, Feb. 20. Additionally, voting for 2018-19 faculty of the year award will be available on UU Portal from March 4-10.
For organizational announcements, the junior class announced that Cardinal Ball would take place on March 2 at 7 p.m. at the Opera House in Humboldt. Tickets will be available for purchase outside of Brewer Dining Hall.
With that, there was a motion for recess and the first senate meeting of the semester adjourned. Senate will meet again on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 9:30 p.m. in Harvey Hall.
