If you’ve ever had the pleasure of going out to eat with me, you know how particular I can be about my dining experience. A few of my restaurant must-haves include: never eating outside (regardless of the weather), always ordering the first time the waiter asks (otherwise, they always take forever to get back to you), and making sure there are large enough portions that I’m full by the end of dinner (meaning tapas are usually a no-go).
My sophomore year, I heard lore of a burger so majestic and legendary that it would shatter all of my “necessities” for what a pleasurable dining experience would be.
KC Finn’s Burgers & BBQ is a food truck/food shack hybrid that changed the way I see burgers. Located on South Highland Avenue under a newly built pavilion, KC Finn’s makes eating outside worth it while also serving up massive portions and a menu that shows you what you want before they even have to ask.
I consider myself a burger connoisseur and have gone out of my way to try every burger and bun in the greater Jackson area. I’ve had gourmet burgers with brioche buns and imported beef, but the first time I bit into a large triple cheeseburger at KC Finn’s, I felt the way I imagine Zion Williamson’s parents felt the first time they saw him dunk. This burger is money!
Yeah, you read that right. A large triple cheeseburger. And they can go so much bigger.
In all of Jackson, I’ve never encountered a burger meal that finds such a perfect balance of greasy indulgence and superb quality. From the first bite, the cheese dripping off the patty, there was no doubt in my mind that I had found my new local hidden gem: the food haven that Hub City tourists unknowingly bypass while Jackson natives luxuriate in carbs and fats.
While I’ve focused mainly on their burgers, any true burger expert knows that there is more to a perfect burger joint than just what lies betwixt both buns. KC Finn’s fries and sweet tea are in perfect harmony with their burgers, and it makes for a match made in “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” heaven.
All in all, I challenge anyone to find a burger more deserving of Jackson’s love. KC Finn’s is located in the heart of Jackson’s resurging south side at 1027 S Highland Avenue and is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
