Over the weekend, the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team went 2-1 in the Christian Brothers Classic tournament in Memphis.
Union came out strong in the tournament, winning their first two matches in a very convincing manner. The tournament officially kicked off the volleyball season, providing an opportunity to visualize the rest of the season.
“We say a lot that game teaches the game, so to get to play and have some real, official film to look at and learn from will be really good for us,” said head coach Darrin McClure.
If game teaches game, then the Lady Bulldogs seem to be on the right track. They bested Kentucky Wesleyan in the first round of the CBU Classic in three straight sets. They followed that performance by doing the same to Maryville University, even overcoming a score of 24-23 to come back and win the second set. Winning both of these matches put them in the final against Lynn University where they were unfortunately swept 3-0.
Redshirt sophomore Meghan Delaney paced the Lady Bulldogs in kills with totals of 13, 22 and 12 while freshman Jordan Vick led the team with a total of 82 assists. Another top performer was senior Abbie Rahn, who led the team with 32 digs throughout the three matches.
“We came to play,” said Rahn. “We were so excited for our first tournament, and we brought that excitement onto the court. It was so energetic and so fun. We were all talking after the game about how no one played selfish.”
That sounds like a team that is worth watching. The Lady Bulldogs are out of town this weekend as they participate in the Southeast Oklahoma State University Classic in Durant, Oklahoma. You can keep up with the team by clicking here or by staying up to date on their twitter at @UUAthleticsVB.
Next week marks the beginning of the home schedule as the team takes on Trevecca Nazarene University on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
