The Lady Bulldogs softball team were hosted in West Florida on Thursday for the Gulf South Conference Tournament, where the team won their first tournament game against #15 University of Alabama Huntsville.
The Gulf South Conference Tournament is double elimination style, which means that the Lady Bulldogs will be heading to the winner’s bracket.
However, the win was not an easy one. The Lady Bulldogs took a healthy lead in the first five innings to make a score of 7-2. What gave them a leg up was Union’s home run hitting, which broke the program record of 44 to make it 45 home runs this season. And when things started to look up, UAH rallied back to tie the game in the 5th inning.
“What a game,” said head coach Mackenzie Sher. “We are proud of this group for paying attention to the little details and fighting. Their perseverance and heart won this game. I am thankful that Christ has put us in a position to come out and enjoy this experience.”
After UAH’s advantage, Union gained a second wind and rallied back to send the game into extra innings. The bats stayed hot through the end of the game but also had solid base running from the team. The Bulldogs made smart decisions to keep players on bases but did a better job of getting the runners home, which ultimately gave Union the lead they needed to end the game in the 9th inning.
