Residence Life will be hosting a new event on campus called Roomie Mingle on Monday, April 22 at 9 p.m. in the Bowld Commons, room 120.
In the past, students have been able to apply for housing as individuals, doubles or triples, and their Resident Director would assign them to a room and attempt to fill it. However, this new housing plan allows students to have more control over where they live and who they live with.
“We want to facilitate [housing] this way so [students] have more input into who they’re going to be living with,” said Ken Litscher, Director of Residence Life. “We want to create a space where they’re able to meet people that they might not have otherwise met.”
College is your home away from home for about four years, and finding roommates that you can get close to and connect with is an important part of that experience.
“I want to be able to talk to these guys and be comfortable around them and actually feel like I have a small piece of home to come to after classes,” said Jake Vaughn, a junior Christian ministry and missions major.
This is the first time Residence Life is hosting an event like this, and they have tried to be as helpful as possible to the students who are coming to it.
“[We’ll] provide some nametags and have them put how many roommates they’re looking for,” said Litscher. “On the nametag, we’ll have them circle preference for cleanliness and temperature, and then we’ll have some questions on the screen for them to talk through with potential roommates to help them think through compatibility.”
The purpose of this event is to relieve some stress from students and to allow them to meet more people that they could see as possible roommates.
“I think this would be extremely beneficial to anyone who goes,” said Vaughn. “While looking for a potential roommate, you have to get to know the person first. I think this is a great way to kick it off.”
