SAC Set To Host The Largest Variety Show In Union History

Union University’s 22nd annual Variety Show, presented by the Student Activities Council (SAC), will be held on April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson.

This year’s show will be one of the largest in Union history, consisting of nine acts and lasting around two and a half hours. Alpha Psi Omega, Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Voices of Proclamation, You Say, Zeta Tau Alpha and SAC are set to perform, and members of the Blank Slate improv team will host.

Members of SAC have been working hard to prepare for Variety Show 2019, and the process of planning for this year’s show began the day after Variety Show 2018 ended. An official interest meeting was held during the fall semester, and groups began practicing after winter break.

Mara Harris, Elly Harshfield and Marley Sullivan are the three leaders for the SAC Variety Show committee, and they have been anticipating Variety Show 2019 for many months.

“No one can truly prepare you for it,” said Harshfield, a junior Christian ministry and missions major. “Details range from keeping the groups on track with deadlines to making sure papers for doors are printed. We truly get to see the ins and outs of what it takes to make Variety Show happen, and it’s a really cool experience to get to be a part of.”

Each of the act’s directors have also been working tirelessly for the past few months to put together a fun and dynamic show.

“The entire show becomes a community,” said Eli Creasy, a junior graphic design major and this year’s director for Lambda Chi Alpha. “You are going through similar challenges, and you’re all working toward the same goal of performing an entertaining show. It is an event that showcases God-given talent but also builds good Christian community.”

Creasy also said that being able to watch and cheer on the other groups really puts into perspective the heart of Variety Show.

“I think the audience can expect to laugh until they get a six-pack from laughing so much, and they’ll really want to sing and dance along with all of the acts,” said Harris, a senior nursing major. “It’s going to be a great event not only for college students, but for the entire community of Jackson. I’m excited that I have gotten to have a front row seat to the entire Variety Show process.  It’s been such an amazing experience to see such creative, talented directors take a vision for their group’s act and bring it to fruition.”

Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and tickets are available online at uu.edu/events/varietyshow.
