School Of Theology And Missions Set To Host Third Session Of Lecture Series

Union University’s School of Theology and Missions is set to host the third session of the STM Lecture Series.

Explaining the purpose for the lecture series, Ray Van Neste, dean of the School of Theology and Missions and director of the R.C. Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, said, “Our goal in each of these is to give our community the opportunity to hear from a leading scholar and to expose our students to significant graduate programs in biblical and theological studies which are interested in recruiting them.”

The third part of the lecture series will kick off on April 4, 2019. The featured speaker for the session is Dr. Stanley E. Porter. Porter currently serves as the president, dean and professor of New Testament at McMaster Divinity College and as the senior editor of Journal of Greco-Roman Christianity and Judaism. He will be speaking on his views on Linguistic Stylistics and Greek Exegesis.

According to  https://www.uu.edu/events/stmlectures, “Stan was educated in the U.S.A. and U.K. and holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies and Linguistics from the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, U.K. Stan has taught for over twenty years in post-secondary institutions in Canada, the USA, and the UK. He remains an internationally-known and respected expert in Greek and New Testament studies.”

Porter’s personal publications include 28 authored books, over 300 authored journal articles and chapters and over a hundred other shorter pieces.

“Dr. Porter is one of the most prolific New Testament scholars of our day and is a leading authority on various aspects of the Greek language and how this should impact our study of the New Testament,” said Van Neste. “I am excited for our students to get to hear from and to interact with him.”

Porter’s lecture will take place in Coburn Dining Room in the Student Union Building on April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
