Sharing The News Of Victory In A City Of Champions

Boston. A history buff’s dream. The home of the reigning World Series champs and Fenway Park. The city that houses some of the country’s and the world’s most prestigious universities.

One such institution is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, more commonly known as MIT. MIT is one of the main places for GO Trippers to minister to during the weeklong trip.

Thanks to the MIT Baptist Chaplain Michael Dean, father of Union student Nathanael Dean, GO Trippers are able to spend time on campus building friendships and sharing the Gospel with students.

Beau Houser, a sophomore marketing major, went on the Boston GO Trip last year and will be spending this summer on the Salt Lake City GO Trip.

“It was really cool to get some real-world experience simply sharing the Gospel with others, especially with that age demographic in a metropolitan setting,“ Houser said.

One outreach tool that Dean uses is free English classes for international students. This allows Union students to not only build relationships on MIT’s campus, but it also provides some students the opportunity to put their major into practice.

Jeff Walker, a senior TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) major, was able to contribute to the English lessons during last year’s trip.

GO Trippers also partner with City on a Hill, a church plant in the Boston area. Students serve the church plant by helping the staff set up for services held in a school gym.

The team also uses “granola outreach” to aid City on a Hill. Granola outreach is a method in which team members pass out granola bars, invite recipients to church and possibly have Gospel conversations.

Maggie Exum, a sophomore education major, has great hopes for the week.

“I have a lot of expectations for the Boston trip,” Exum said. “These expectations aren’t necessarily of what the trip will look like or what is going to happen, but it’s more of a state of the heart– I am expectant of the Lord.”
