On Sept. 6, the Union board of trustees approved the master plan that will heavily influence the next twenty years on campus.
According to the plan, the Great Lawn is going to stretch all the way from Pleasant Plains Extended to the bypass. Due to this extension, the BAC and the PAC are slated to be done away with as they will be replaced by stand-alone departmental buildings.
In total, there will be eight new buildings (according to the campus master plan map) that will all line the Great Lawn. The only building that is mentioned specifically is the new chapel, although, one could imagine that there will be a new business building, art building, education building, a new gymnasium, among a few more.
WNBJ 39 News had the chance to interview our President Samuel “Dub” Oliver about the master plan.
“The thing I’m most excited for is the new chapel,” Oliver said.
Gabby Morocco, SGA President, echoed much of what Oliver had to say.
“I’m also really excited about the chapel just being a great place to worship.”
The chapel seems to be the crown jewel of what is to be done over the next twenty years, so students can expect it to be very eye-catching.
In addition to all these new structures, there will also be landscaping improvements, as well as more parking- two minor yet huge additions to campus that will help with curb appeal.
While this plan brings much excitement and speculation because of all the newness and improvement, Oliver has other motivations for his excitement.
“One of the core values at Union is that we’re future directed, which means that we’re constantly thinking about the future, and we’re trying to equip students for the future.”
This campus master plan was prayed over, thought through and presented with care in hopes of one day helping students to achieve academic success and future competence in their respective fields of study.
