This past semester, College Democrats was added back to the list of over 60 active student organizations on Union University’s campus.
Union University gives students the opportunity to start and attend clubs that interest them. Each club strives to carry out Union’s core values, which are to be excellence-driven, Christ-centered, people-focused and future-directed. College Democrats is one of these clubs.
“Our primary purpose is to promote diversity of voices on campus,” said Mac Hazlerig, senior political science major and President of College Democrats. “We want to give students a safe place to explore their beliefs and ask questions about politics and policies.”
College Democrats have had several events this semester, such as a watch party for a democratic primary debate, a voter drive and a candidates and policies workshop. They encourage students to be educated and registered voters, no matter their party. Each event is designed to aid students in thinking through their beliefs and getting them more involved in the political process.
“Christianity and Jesus don’t strictly fit in the conservative, Republican mold, and we want to encourage respectful conversations about politics,” said Katie Allison, senior history major and Vice President of College Democrats. “I believe there are faithful Christians in both parties.”
Both Hazlerig and Allison voiced their desire for this club to be seen as a way for students to safely explore their beliefs, rather than as a controversial club that is dedicated to making everyone a Democrat. Many different views are represented on the leadership team, but all of them agree that they love Union and want to make it a place where thoughtful dialogue can happen, no matter the subject.

According to the official Democrat party platform sexual perversion is AOK. According to Democrats, the Republican party is a purveyor of racism, greed and oppression. And yet Katie Allison says,
“I believe there are faithful Christians in both parties.”
