Theatre Preps For Entirely Student-Led Production Called “Harvey”

The Union University theatre will be showing the entirely student-led production, “Harvey,” from May 3 through May 7 in the W. D. Powell Theatre.

Senior Crista Wilhite is the student director of the production, which promises to be both comedic and charming.

According to senior Cayley Cantwell, a handful of students within a theatre production class have been working constantly to prepare for this production, including herself as both the scenic designer and technical director.

“This play is a classic that all ages will enjoy, and is full of laughter and surprises,” said Cantwell. “We are all very excited to present Harvey to our audience.”

When asked what viewers can expect from the show, Cantwell said, “At its heart, Harvey is a play with a simple message, given to us in the words of main character Elwood P. Dowd: ‘In this world…you must be oh, so smart or oh, so pleasant. For years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.’ That’s really what we’ve tried to give our audience with this show – a lovely, pleasant experience, one in which they can sit down for two hours and escape to a whimsical and comical world full of mistaken identities, mischievous tricks and, of course, everyone’s favorite, Harvey, the six and a half foot tall, invisible rabbit, who is the source of all the mischief.”

This will be the theatre’s last production of the semester. They are fresh off the success of the musical “Brigadoon,” which was well received by students and faculty alike. This production will be several students’ final show at Union and is sure to be an emotionally filled weekend.

“Harvey” will open this Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m., with showings to follow on Saturday at 7:30, Sunday at 2:30 and Tuesday at 7:30.

Tickets can be purchased outside of Cobo during lunch hours or at the door before the show. Tickets are $4.
