Union’s baseball team hosted Christian Brothers University this weekend at Fesmire Field for the last series of the season. The Bulldogs swept the series.
The Bulldogs took the first game with a score of 8-3 and soared past the Buccaneers in the second game with a decisive 17-3 win. In the last game of the series, the Bulldogs pulled out a close 8-6 win to take it all.
After having a defensive rough patch during mid-season, the team finished out strong. The team showed exceptional fielding by pitching and allowed few runs to score. Pitching was led by right-handed pitcher Brandon Maxwell, who ended the series with 5 strikeouts and no batters walked.
“Defense is just one of those things you just get better at with more and more reps,” Maxwell said. “Our guys put in the work, and we finished the year on a good note.”
With wins this weekend, it gave the guys a push to strive harder next season and improve their record of 16-32. The Bulldogs will also gain some fresh faces on the coaching staff next year, as this is head coach Lee Driggers’ last season with the Bulldogs before he retires. But this does not put a damper on the Bulldogs’ spirits for next season.
“It is always good to go out on a high note, especially a sweep,” left-handed pitcher Spencer Woods said. “It was an emotional weekend with it being senior weekend and knowing it was our last time playing with this specific team. We have a bunch of guys returning next year, and it definitely helps that we could finish this season on a high note. But next season will be here before we know it and it will be different considering the team will have two new coaches. This is just another test that we will have to work together as a team to overcome.”
