On Monday night, Union University’s two club sports teams, the Jaxx and the Jillz ultimate frisbee teams, held their tryouts at West Jackson Baptist Church in hopes of bringing new talent and strength to their rosters before the upcoming season.
The Jaxx men’s team and the Jillz women’s team have grown tremendously over the last few seasons and are both on track to have promising seasons this year. Both teams compete in tournaments against many other large schools throughout the season, and the Jaxx and Jillz teams give Union students another way to engage with athletics on campus.
“We had a great turnout of girls from all years on Monday night,” said Tori Kersey, junior social work major and Jillz’s team captain, when asked about Monday night’s tryouts. “It’s exciting to see people from all around campus coming together and playing frisbee. We witnessed amazing talent and are very excited for this upcoming season.”
Kersey’s fellow teammate and co-captain Emma Cate Hare, sophomore TESOL major, also commented on their upcoming season.
“I personally am most excited about our mindset going into this season,” said Hare. “We are stronger than ever and are going into every practice with an intense drive for excellence.”
The Jaxx team is also looking forward to a great season and had many guys interested in joining the team.
“Tryouts went very well,” said Sam Drotar, sophomore computer science major and a captain for the Jaxx, when asked about Monday night’s tryout. “We had close to 30 attendees and had a fantastic time seeing their passion and athleticism.”
Both teams will hold games during Family Weekend in September, and both teams are hoping to have a great turn out in support. The Jillz will be playing University of Alabama Birmingham, and the Jaxx will play Vanderbilt University during their Family Weekend matches. Come out and support the Jaxx and Jillz on family weekend.
