Union University might soon get a new club on campus for the purpose of hanging out and connecting with other students. Donny Turner, a senior math major, and Daniel Clegg, a senior computer science major, have worked together to make a Union University Smash Bros Club for all students who want to join.
Union has a decent number of students who enjoy playing Smash and want a group in which to play together. Both Turner and Clegg saw potential for this club after last semester’s Smash tournament, hosted by Tristan Wood.
“Without Tristan’s initiative with the tournament last semester, we would have never known that there was such interest with it on campus,” said Turner.
Turner, the winner of the Smash tournament, sees Smash as a way for students to connect without an academic agenda.
“Union has a lot of academic clubs, but they don’t really have any social clubs,” Turner said. “And so, we saw that as a chance to bring together people who are more introverted, to just have a chance to hang out more too.”
“[Smash Bros] is a very easy way to connect with people you do not know,” Clegg said.
He and Turner have both been playing Smash with each other, with roommates and with friends for a long time.
“It’s just been something that we all do together,” Clegg said.
Both Turner and Clegg want other students to get involved and be able to relax and connect with a community that wants to have fun outside of an academic setting.
Although their club has not been passed through senate yet, it is expected to.
“I think it’s going to be really big when it gets started, just because there’s nothing like this on campus,” Turner said. “I think this is really meeting a need on campus.”
Both Turner and Clegg want all skill levels. This isn’t a club for just the elite players, but for anyone who is wanting to get better at the game, learn how to play or just have fun and connect with other students.
