On March 13-17, Union University theatre will present the comedy “You Can’t Take It With You” in the W. D. Powell Theatre. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 15.
Directed by Union alum Crista Wilhite, the show takes place in the 1930’s and centers on the quirky Sycamore family. Alice Sycamore, played by freshman theatre major Julia Burks, introduces her new fiancé to the family, and chaos ensues.
This comedy features junior theatre majors Jake Beals and Sullivan Hogan, Union alum Ian Malone and retired Union professor David Burke, among others.
Although he has not acted in more than thirty years, Burke has directed many productions here at Union and was ready to take the stage the moment the opportunity became available.
“Being on stage here at Union is kind of a minor miracle,” said Burke. “When I first read the play and they offered me the role, I was tremendously excited and couldn’t wait to get going on it.”
The actors work off of each other with palpable chemistry and wonderful comedic timing which will surely have audiences laughing in their seats.
“This is probably the best cast I’ve ever worked with,” said junior psychology major Caroline Adcock. “Everyone there is so hardworking and passionate about their craft. It has been so fun to see everyone explore and develop their characters, and it makes for an incredible show.”
While the show is a comedy, there is still room for a message about living life to the fullest and following your passions.
“Given the conditions of our time, we actually really need something like ‘You Can’t Take It With You,’ to be reminded of how important family is and how important living life to the fullest is,” said Burke.
There will be a preview show this Thursday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. exclusively for Union staff and students. Tickets for this performance will be $1 for students and $3 for staff.
