Res Life’s First Annual “Chomped” Event

On Friday, Feb. 7, Union University Residence Life hosted the first Union Cup event of the semester, “Chomped.”

The event, which was a spin-off of the Food Network Show “Chopped,” kicked off at 7 p.m. in the Bowld Gym, where each residence building brought their team to receive the three mystery ingredients that they would incorporate into a dessert and present to a team of judges.

After receiving the ingredients (Fruity Pebbles, cherry pie filling and an avocado), each team raced back to their dorm buildings to get to work preparing a dessert that was tasty and creative.

At 8:30 p.m., teams brought their desserts to the Bowld Gym to be judged. The dishes were distributed among five tables, with four judges assigned to each table. Judges selected one dessert from each table to move on to the final round. The final five were Watters 2, Wright, Pollard, Grace 2 and Hurt 1.

“I was so impressed by the creativity of all the students. Who knew that you can mix Fruity Pebbles, avocados and cherries and actually make it work together?” said Joe Ball, the director for discipleship and ministry and “Chomped” judge. “One group pureed the avocados like icing on a cupcake.”

During the judging process, chants and cheers erupted from the participants throughout the gym.

“The biggest surprise of the night was that the Pollard Pandas advanced to the finals and won over Ted Kluck’s tastebuds,” said Ball. “That in itself makes Chomped a fantastic event by Res Life.”

After the judges tasted and voted on the final five dishes, they announced the winners. The ladies of Wright won first place.

“We went into the competition not really knowing what to expect, but we were all able to work together and have so much fun while doing it,” said Hope Campbell, Wright resident advisor and senior political science major. “The women of Wright showed up, and I am proud to say we are the ‘chompians.’”
