Residence Life Holds Hype Video Contest

Last weekend, inclement weather left Union’s Residence Life students at the annual 1/2 K starting block disappointed, but not defeated.

Although the potential storms caused the event to be called off, the rain did not prevent students from getting involved. Instead of the usual relay race between buildings, Residence Life held a hype video contest.

The cancelation of the race disappointed the students initially, but the spirit of competition was not lost. Students enjoyed participating in the video contest and producing content to be watched by Union’s entire campus.

Every building was eligible to join the contest, but it was mostly the freshmen that were involved. The Heritage Complex produced video clips that revealed each dorm building’s personality and spirit.

“I honestly really enjoyed the hype videos,” said Rebecca Wood, sophomore elementary education major and Heritage RA. “They were a great way for each building’s personality to show though, and we were still able to build team spirit even though we couldn’t race.”

Heritage students showed off their unique characteristics. Each freshmen building delivered a video that gave a sneak peek as to what this year has to offer.

Out of 12 submissions, the building that produced the most hype video to win the contest was the Pollard Pandas. Their video had thematic elements in addition to shots of the whole building. The residents showed team charisma which led them to “cross the finish line” first.

“It was actually really fun,” said James Flowers, freshman zoology major. “We really came together and came up with cool ideas to almost be like storytellers.”

Despite the cancelation of the 1/2 K, Union’s Residence Life came together to enjoy competition and community. The Hype Video Contest was a solution to the unexpected change of events last weekend.
