Last week, Nov. 9 to Nov. 13, the Union University chapter of Kappa Delta hosted their annual Shamrock Week to raise money in support of Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA).
Kappa Delta fundraised through two main events, a percentage night at Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steak-burgers and their annual Quesadillas with KD dinner. Sydney Spangler, a senior social work major and Vice President of Community Service of Kappa Delta, worked with her sorority sisters to organize and lead these events.
Spangler values that the money raised during Shamrock Week not only benefits children across the country, but it helps children directly in Jackson. Of the money raised, 20 percent went to the national organization of PCAA, however, the other 80 percent remained in Jackson and went directly to the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Through Shamrock Week, Kappa Delta strived to educate themselves and others outside the sorority about the statistics of child abuse and the issue of child abuse here in Jackson. The mission of PCAA and the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse is to address these issues by providing counseling and treatment for children who have already been abused and protecting children who are at risk of abuse.
“This is helping kids who have been through a lot. Helping them get back to where they need to be and get back to a childhood that they can enjoy after such intense trauma which is amazing to see, and it’s amazing to support that,” said Spangler.
For the percentage night at Freddy’s, members of Kappa Delta brought friends and enjoyed community and a meal together. 15 percent of the sales that night went to PCAA and locally to Carl Perkins.
On Wednesday evening, students from across campus came together on the Bowld patio for a festive quesadilla dinner. All of Kappa Delta joined in the preparation for the dinner whether that was through cooking quesadillas, handing out the food or drinks or selling tickets. All of the proceeds from Quesadillas with KD went to the supported organizations.
Karley Hathcock, a junior marketing major, attends Quesadillas with KD every year with her sorority “family” in Chi Omega. They enjoy attending Kappa Delta’s philanthropy events every year because they believe it is a great way to not only foster community on Union’s campus but that it is also fun to support such a great cause.
“I think that the work that campus organizations like Kappa Delta do is so important! It helps us support each other as sisters in the Panhellenic community, and it allows us to get to know people we might not have met before,” said Hathcock.
