The Union University Potters Guild will be hosting their annual Christmas pottery sale on Friday, Dec. 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the SUB hallway.
This sale allows ceramics students the opportunity to display their hard work and sell it. It usually includes students’ work, professional work, functional and non-functional work.
“It gives the students real-world experience [and] funds much of professional artist and work experience for our students,” said Lee Benson, an art professor and faculty advisor of UU Potters Guild.
Madeline Blackburn, a junior art therapy major, will be selling mugs and bowls at the pottery sale. She is looking forward to displaying her hard work for people to see and purchase.
“It’s so exciting to be able to share what we make with people outside the art department,” Blackburn said. “I think it builds a lot of community not only in the art department but throughout Union.”
The students are very grateful to think of someone buying their art pieces and displaying them in their homes.
“I think it’s awesome people would eat their cereal out of a bowl I made or have a little dino on their shelf,” said Natalie Stookey, a junior theological studies major.
Although she will not be adding any pieces to this year’s pottery sale, Stookey believes that it is important to get her work out to the public.
This pottery sale is a stepping stone for some students to get professional and public attention.
30 percent of the sale profits will go to the Potters Guild, which funds student travel, art workshops and visiting artists, as well as building materials and equipment for the 3D program.
The remaining 70 percent of the profits will go back to the students allowing them the opportunity to choose how they want to use their funds. While some will put their funds in their classmates’ ceramic art pieces, others will use it differently.
“I would probably put the profits back into art or just school,” Stookey said.
