Throughout the fall semester, Hub City Fitness partnered with Union University Wellness Services to provide women a free biweekly fitness class.
Leanna Salem, a junior exercise science major, was the student who first organized these biweekly fitness nights.
“Before COVID in March, I would attend these classes by myself, and I had so much fun,” Salem said. “I wanted to share that with my friends because I love my friends and I knew that they could benefit from these things too.”
Every class is different and provides students the opportunity to sample what Hub City Fitness has to offer. Classes range from relaxing yoga to upbeat cardio hip-hop, as well as body toning nights like chisel and OMG (Oh My Glutes).
“It made me feel better physically and mentally knowing I was working on myself and distressing from school,” Salem said.
These classes are completely free for Union students. If students enjoy these free classes, Hub City Fitness offers a special deal for regular classes at a cheaper price.
Mary Vranyes, a junior marketing major, said, “My favorite part is working out in a group. If I try to go to the gym and workout on my own, I get nothing done. It’s a nice change of scenery and pace.”
This fitness series has been a great success according to Salem. She said that due to the great response to classes, Wellness Services would be partnering with Hub City Fitness again in the spring.
Salem hopes more students will continue to join in the future. She said that it’s an awesome opportunity to gather off-campus in a fun and safe way.
“I think especially this semester considering we had fewer events and the ability to gather in a safe way can be difficult, it was a way for students to feel united,” Salem said.
Hub City Fitness will be offering a final class following Thanksgiving break before the semester ends. Salem invites Union students to join Hub City Fitness on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. for some yoga and de-stress.
